Select version:

Your display’s resolution determines the size of text and objects on your screen. By default, the resolution on your display is set to show the sharpest text and the most detailed images. While it’s best to use the default resolution, you can manually set the resolution to make text and objects appear larger on your screen, or adjust it to make text and objects appear smaller so you have more space on your screen.

Set the resolution for your primary display

On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Displays, then click Display.
Select Scaled, then select one of the options.

Set the resolution for a connected display

If you have more than one display, additional resolution options are available after the display is connected.

On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Displays, then click Display.
Press and hold the Option key while you click Scaled to see additional resolutions for the second display.
Select a scaled resolution option for the second display.

Depending on how you adjust the resolution, some app windows may not fit entirely on the screen. Using a scaled resolution may affect performance.

Can you please tell me how can I find out the screen resolution and dpi for the screen on my Macbook Pro? (I got it last year, 2009.)

This depends on the model of Macbook Pro (i.e. the screen size - 13.3', 15.4' or 17') you purchased, but the resolution and DPI (or PPI), for the 2009 unibody models, is provided by Wikipedia (here and here).

However, given the resolution and display size, you can easily calculate the PPI. In summary:

Open the Apple menu at the very top-left of the screen and click on About This Mac. Click on the More Info button, which will open up a window with lots of categories of information. The Graphics/Displays category will tell you your screen resolution.

All these answers are good but the fastest way to find the mac resolution is to do SHIFT + COMMAND + 4 (screenshot shortcut). Move the cursor to the bottom right to get the coordinates.
