Install a Linksys workgroup switch to attach multiple computers to a single network connection or to allow several systems to connect to each other. A workgroup switch can segment a network into logical sections by connecting each port to a separate hub, speeding up access between segments and increasing overall bandwidth of simple networks. Connect a mix of multiple hubs or workstations to a Linksys workgroup switch to form a custom wired network that can be used for many purposes.

Step 1

Power down each of the computers that you intend to patch to the Linksys workgroup switch.

Step 2

Run an Ethernet patch cable between each computer or network device and the Linksys workgroup switch.

Step 3

Connect the incoming network cable from the router or other network device (if one is being used to connect to a larger network) to one port on the Linksys switch. Any port can be used for any connection to the switch.

Step 4

Connect each of the Ethernet patch cables to ports on the Linksys switch.

Step 5

Connect the patch cables to the computers or other network devices.

Step 6

Connect power to the Linksys workgroup switch. Power on the other network devices and computers.

Tip

  • Solid green lights typically indicate connections, and blinking green lights typically indicate activity on the individual port. Use high-grade patch cables that are rated Category 5 or higher for network speeds of 100 Mbps or higher.
