Overview

What is EndNote

EndNote X7 Basics (Mac) - 14 - 2. EndNote Online/ Basic EndNote now comes with a free 2 year access to EndNote online, an online version of EndNote that you can sync with your desktop library (only one library can be synced) but you can share groups with collaborators. This is great for keeping your library up to date on several computers.

  • EndNote is a tool to create a database of citations, called a library.
  • Citations can be added to EndNote manually, by importing citations from a database, or by uploading PDF files.
  • EndNote interacts with word processing software and uses an Output Style to generate in-text citations and format a bibliography.
  • EndNote comes preloaded with the 100 most popular Output Styles (MLA, APA, Chicago, JAMA). More are available on the EndNote website or you can create your own custom style.

Adding Full Text

There are several ways to attach full text (PDF files) of articles to the citation in your EndNote library. For a quick over view watch the Find Full Text - captioned YouTube video. This video is for EndNote X7, but applied to EndNote X8 as well.

  • Use EndNote's Find Full Text feature to request the PDF from the publisher.
    • EndNote can find full text for many citations with a DOI or a URL.
    • Not all publishers allow EndNote to retrieve the PDF files.
    • Work's great when you are on the College Station campus because publishers recognize the Texas A&M IP address.
    • Requires using the University Libraries Settings, see below, if you are off campus.
  • Use OpenURL linking to access full text through the University Libraries software or make a Get It For Me request.
    • Some full text isn't available through the Find Full Text feature of EndNote.
    • Use the References -> URL -> OpenURL Link to see the University Libraries menu with access to full text or Get It For Me.
  • Import PDF files into EndNote to create a citations and attach the PDF.
    • This will only work with new PDF files that have metadata associated with them.
See the Endnote PDF import YouTube video.
This is for an older version of EndNote, but still applies to the current version.
